Where: Qing Dao, China
When: July 17-19 2015 Why: An invited speaker What: Semiconductor materials relating to Electrical Engineering. Getting off the plane and wandering through the airport, I was surprised that Airport was quite large and modern. I didn't feel out of place because people spoke Mandarin, and interestingly enough, the locals whom I met thought I was Korean; the Taxi driver who drove me to my hotel said that I was "Mei Nu" which means beauty. Because it was Friday late afternoon rush hour, it took about 1 hour to get to my hotel. Looking outside of my taxi window, I noticed large residential buildings spread across large boulevards, with hardly any trees. The scenery reminded me of the many large cities I've been to in Asia. The hotel was located on the campus of the University of Qing Dao. It was large but wasn't fancy as as far as hotels go.(see pictures). I got to my room, turned on the TV, got really bored, and decided to find a coffee shop in the area. No luck. The next day was the conference. It was very interesting. There were speakers from seven countries and the opening remarks were given by a professor from Georgia Tech University in the U.S. He had just flown in the night before but still he was very enthusiastic as he introduced himself and everyone there. We shared our opinions about many topics including academic, professional work as well as our travel experiences. I was very impressed that everyone was very well rounded and well traveled. I had a great time speaking with professors from Japan and Malaysia, and we were all so very happy to meet one another. Perhaps, we'll meet again someday. |
